In saying goodbye to my twenties, I wanted to write down a fraction of what I learned this past decade in the hopes that I can remember them in my next, and use them with clear intention. Here are just a few of those things.

Love is a one-way street, intersecting with another one-way street.

With certain people, the most valuable thing you have is your reputation. In the end, those people don’t really matter.

You can’t avoid offending some of the people some of the time.

Only boring people get bored.

Love is not always worth the risk, but it is never a waste of time.

Sometimes it is not better to love and lose than to never love at all.

Always wear something that will keep you warm, but which can be removed in a hurry.

Some people will build a wall around their heart just to see who loves them enough to climb over it.

Never waste a chance to play in the snow.

Find a bench in the park and claim it. Visit it often.

It it better to lose your pride to the one you love than to lose the one you love to your pride. It is heartbreaking to realize that sometimes the one you love will, in fact, choose their pride.

There are times when going faster gives you more control.

You can tell a lot about someone’s character by their handshake.

Don’t buy the dress or make the playlist until the wedding is a sure thing.

Get renter’s insurance. It is more affordable than the consequential cost of not having it.

There is no such thing as an emotional condom; you can’t protect your heart.

Don’t make a mess of someone’s life and then expect that person to clean it up.

It is the job of a therapist to convince you, over many hours and hundreds of dollars, that you are normal; alive and in pain just like everyone else.

Money doesn’t buy happiness, but it does buy time.

If it’s a cold day, drink something hot.

The people you love will hurt you the most.

You will hurt the people you love.

Cough syrup doesn’t work.

If you aren’t passing your math class, take your professor out for a few beers.

Empathy is the greatest virtue.

Giving love is the best way to feel love.

Sometimes you may not agree with the Golden Rule. Fake it.

Never try to mother a man. Especially if he doesn’t like his mother.

It’s never a shame when you admit you don’t know something, and often a shame when you assume that you do.

If you’re in a conversation and you’re not asking questions, then it’s not a conversation, it’s a monologue.

Zinc and garlic really do prevent colds.

People need you to understand them more than they need you to agree with them.

Sometimes an angry person is just an unloved person in disguise.

As much as you want to and as hard as you try, you cannot fix anyone.

When someone you love is being needy, it’s because they need.

Assume love.

A relationship is like a series of mountains, where you and the person with you that you have loved and have traveled with for so long either choose to leave the other behind when you get to the top of the mountain, or wait for the other to catch up. It is always a choice. If the one you love isn’t waiting for you at the top of the mountain, if they have left you behind, stay at the top for a while and enjoy the view anyway.

To find happiness, live in the moment. To find meaning, revisit the past.

Growth comes from being uncomfortable. It makes you move.

We are all broken. That doesn’t mean we can’t hold joy and love within us; it just means we all need frequent refills of both.

I have so much more I need to learn.

I hope I’m half this smart in 3 years…

Well, first you’ll have to get/make a background picture with the right dimensions. The one at Love Puppy is 1400px × 1326px.

To change the background image properties you’ll have to get into the Style part of the theme code.

You currently have this:
body {
	        background: #FCFCFC url('/themes/4/bg.gif');
	        margin: 0px 0px 50px 60px;
	        font: Normal 13px Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
	        color: #443535;
	    }
You need to change it to something like:
	    body {
	        background: #FCFCFC 
 url(http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3099/2595371561_640febca29_o.jpg );
		background-attachment: fixed;
	        margin: 0px 0px 50px 60px;
	        font: Normal 13px Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;
	        color: #443535;
	    }
You can swap the JPG for your preferred background pic. Make sure the dimensions are suitable.

The fixed makes it stay put. If you leave this out it will move with scrolling.
